Summary:
This collection of photographic essays on child labor around the world explores the physical and political conditions, the economic and health effects, and what can be done to reduce it. The author/photographer includes a list of questions, a bibliography, resources to contact, and an index for further exploration.

Teaching Ideas:
The photographs make thought-provoking prompts for writing. What kind of work do kids do? What are governments doing about it? What can be done to protect children? Finding the countries cited provides opportunities for map and geography skills. As a homework assignment learners can look for the clothing label (not made with child labor) mentioned in the book. Readers can research the specific child labor laws in your country/state/city to compare with those in the book using a Venn Diagram. Go to program NOW on the www.pbs.org web page for more information on child labor. Other books that can be used as a text set on child labor are Kids at Work,, Immigrant Kids, and The Circuit.
