Summary:
This book, winner of the 2001 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, chronicles the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. The book begins with slave trading and ends with the "Black Power" movement of the late 1960's. A timeline, bibliography, and index are included.

Teaching Ideas:
Nearly all nonfiction teaching strategies will work very well with these short chapters. Chapters can also be excerpted to be added to other units of study (e.g., U.S. in the 1960's). Many topics for further inquiry are also possible.
