Summary: |
A family finds a baby on its doorstep with a note asking them to care for the baby indefinitely. They begin to love the baby, even though they know they will have to say goodbye, and through the process of becoming attached to the child they are able to deal with their grief from having lost their own child. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Perhaps this story should not be taught, but should just be read and enjoyed and discussed. However, discussions on family (on raising children not your own) and on dealing with grief could easily follow. If teachers choose to work with various component parts of the book, they may want to examine the author's use of language to create a mood and to create images. Additional teaching ideas may be found at http://literacy.kent.edu/Oasis/Pubs/0300.htm. For biographical information on the author, look at website www.edupaperback.org/authorbios/maclach.html. |
