HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
Lots of photographs and a fairly easy-to-read text tell the story of the tenements that were built to house immigrants during the turn of the century (19th - 20th). Further reading includes books for adults and children as well as related WWW sites.

Teaching Ideas:
Learners may want to compare living in poverty then and now, cities and rural areas, etc. Many cities are currently reconsidering their public housing options, so newspaper or magazine articles would provide supplementary reading. This text could belong, as well, in a unit about immigration and the development of neighborhoods for new immigrants, a topic that also lends itself to then-and-now consideration. Local historical societies have more information.
