Summary:
Centered around a family reunion, a boy speaks about his older brother, his parents, grandparents, and extended family in short, easily accessible free verse.

Teaching Ideas:
There are a wealth of family topics to explore in discussion and writing: the family outcast, a new baby embarrasses a teenager, the position of the middle child, death of a relative, birth of a new sibling, and the general give and take of family life. Because the poems are simple to understand, they make good models to imitate, to study for figurative language and meter. Students might enjoy discussing what makes these poems. As an inference activity, learners might try to describe the boy who narrates the poems.
