Summary: |
A graphic novel format depicts the activist Diane Wilson and her fight against water pollution along the Gulf Coast of Texas. The illustrations contain diagrams to explain problems of pollution. |
Teaching Ideas: |
After reading the book students could do a Discussion Web strategy on whether Diane's friend Blackburn made a good choice to join the Formosa corporation. Teachers will find many open ended questions for discussion and writing e.g. Why did Diane's family dislike her activism? Since Diane was a good problem solver, students could make a list of the steps that Diane followed. Next, they could choose a local environmental problem, research it using the problem-solving steps (where to go for information, whom to talk to, whom to ask for help, etc.) and then choose an action to implement. |
