Summary:
Four-year-old Anna Howard Shaw arrived in the U.S in 1851, lived as a pioneer in Michigan, became a teacher, a minister, a doctor, and worked for women's right to vote before her death in 1919.

Teaching Ideas:
This book can be used in several different text sets: pioneer women--Dandelion, Dakota Dugout, Aurora Means Dawn, and I Have Heard of a Land; the suffrage movement; the contribions of women in history; or Don Brown's books about unusual women who explored paths less traveled--Ruth Law Thrills a Nation, Alice Ramsey's Great Adventure, Uncommon Traveler, and Far Beyond the Garden Gate. Since the book examines the question of what childhood experiences influence adult activities, readers can discuss or write about Anna Howard Shaw's early life.
