Summary:
In a beautiful reprint of a 1973 book, the author tells the story of the legendary blind musician Ray Charles. An Afterword updates the earlier version.

Teaching Ideas:
The book belongs in text sets on African American musicians and on jazz. Like The Blues Singers, this book provides contextual information for a study of a range of topics--African-American life, music, and the eras of Ray Charles' life. The illustrations are done in a very unique style that still seems fresh today and speaks to the style of Ray Charles' music. They could be used without the text to explore the man and his style. Learners may want to discuss what enabled him to overcome his handicap, perhaps comparing Elvis Presley's story in Shake Rag.
