Summary:
Subtitled "The true story of the day America entered World War II," this book describes the attack on Pearl Harbor from the perspectives of four people, both Japanese and American. Excerpts about others who were influenced by the attack are also provided, as is an index, glossary, and list of books for further information. Illustrations include photographs and archival material.

Teaching Ideas:
Comparison/contrast discussions and writing will be a natural with this book, especially between Japanese and American and military and civilian thinking. Franklin D. Roosevelt's edits (p. 53) will make an interesting addition to writing instruction. Readers can keep track of the people mentioned in a matrix, write dialogue for them, and do a Readers' Theater activity. The first-person accounts may also prompt students to write about their memories of important historical events--perhaps assasinations of JFK, MLK Jr. or 9/11. In addition to the web sites given in the book, Yahooligans offers 7 excellent WWW sites about Pearl Harbor. Japanese motivation for the attack is not addressed in the book, so this may be a good reason to peruse the WWW sites.
