Summary:
Russell Freedman has created another interesting non-fiction book, this time on the vaqueros, who were the forerunners of cowboys. As usual, the author illustrates his essays with paintings, archival photographs and includes useful resources in a bibliography, a glossary, acknowledgements, and an index.

Teaching Ideas:
Use this book in text sets on cowboys and the Southwestern U.S. and pair the chapter on black with Black Cowboys Wild Horses. Because they are not included, students may want to use a map to locate the places mentioned and to create a timeline, including the tools created by the vaqueros. Students can compare vaqueros with cowboys using a Venn diagram or a matrix with categories for dress, social status, pay, tools, work etc. Because the glossary shows how Spanish words were corrupted in American English, learners could collect place names, names of foods, clothing (khaki, denim) etc. that originated in other languages, especially Native American words for locations.
