Summary: |
These three stories fit with George Ella Lyon's collection Choices, but were not included in the original collection because some readers found them too controversial. Our readers found them powerful and moving, addressing life situations that many ABE students will find real and compelling. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers may ask students to read these alone and write journal entries and then read them together and discuss them. Teachers may want to ask students to consider these questions: Is voting a significant issue for you? Why or why not? Do you think it should be? If you could relive any moment of your life and act differently, what moment would it be? Why does Eileen choose an abortion? Which of her reasons are the most significant to you? What is your opinion of the choice she made? Teachers will want to look at other of Lyon's books as well, particularly her set of 13 stories Choices, which many ABE students have loved.
