Summary: |
American history from Colonial times to the present is presented through 65 poems about individuals--some real and some imaginary. A timeline of historic events runs across the lower part of the page and a note about writing the book appears at the end. The collage illustrations are thought-provoking. Although the poems are uneven in quality, the use of varied rhyme schemes and line placement invites exploration of different poetic forms. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers can excerpt individual poems to supplement the study of American history. Although the poems sometimes sacrifice meaning to rhyme scheme, students can practice a variety of poetic rhyme schemes by imitating them. Learners might be motivated to learn about an historical event by selecting a person involved in the event and writing a poem about him or her. The poems lend themselves to choral reading, paired reading, and Readers' Theater. |
