Summary:
During a brief few months of their productive artistic years, the painters Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gaugin shared a yellow house in Arles, in southern France. The book is illustrated with their works of art and the illustrator's researched depiction of their daily lives. Biographical information on each artist, notes by the author and artist, a bibliography, an information about the reproductions make the book a useful classroom resource.

Teaching Ideas:
Students have ample material to compare and contrast the two artists and their styles, using a Venn diagram or a matrix. Students could assume the point-of-view of one of the artists and his role in the story. Students can look in travel books and on the Internet for information about Arles to see why the painters liked the location. Look for reproduced paintings and more information on web sites: www.carpenter9.freeserve.co.uk; www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/van_gogh_vincent.html; www.seanet.com/users/mfost/van/0060v.html; and www.vangoghgallery.com/misc/bio.htm.
