Summary: |
This book is subtitled "The Story of the Underground Railroad," and it is that, but it's also more-- the history of slavery is presented, biographies of key figures are provided, lesislation is discussed. The author is Canadian, so this provides an interesting "twist" to the discussion. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Learners might want to compare this book, with its Canadian author, to others about the Underground Railroad. The subtle differences are interesting. Links to several related topics are plentiful-- Quakers, Amistad, Fugitive Slave Act, famous figures, Civil War. Brief narratives, many about "ordinary" people are sprinkled throughout. Teachers may want to use these for comparison/ contrast lessons, for example. Opportunities for map work abound. Making a timeline would be helpful to differentiate the historical events. The Afterword might lead to web-based inquiry about "slavery" in today's world. |
