Summary:
In this engrossing 266-page book, Matt, age 17, is falsely accused of trying to blow up his high school. His friends desert him, but a girl who calls herself "Ugly Girl" befriends him, and together they weather public opinion, the police, parents, teachers, and other kids.

Teaching Ideas:
Learners may want to keep notes or a reading journal about Big Mouth or Ugly Girl as they read in order to track their changes. Learners may want to consider the adults in the book-- are they well drawn or caricatures? The issue of "talking" on the computer when we feel uncomfortable about talking in person might be of interest. Students may also want to explore the "mob mentality" present in the book-- is this the way all people respond or only teens? In family literacy programs, students may want to evaluate the parents' and school's responses to the initiating event.
