Teaching Ideas:
Most appropriate competent readers, this 281-page book has enough suspense and appeal that many readers will not be daunted by its length. Students may want to act some scenes out with each other or may want to follow the reading of the book by seeing the classic movie starring Gregory Peck. It would lead easily into a study of the judicial system and tie in with recent noteworthy trials (O.J. Simpson, Rodney King). Students may want to follow by analyzing Jem and Scout's road out of childhood, by discussing parenting issues and the model Atticus provides. Students may want to read this book as part of a unit on the South during the Depression. For more information about The Great Depression, look at website www.amate.com.con/greatdepression.html.
